Learn how others act on live student responses
I love how the screen is set up so you can see what a majority of your students are doing at one time. I realized that this is how I want to show off my students’ work.
“I’ve now made over 100 formatives in the last four months and will continue to make them until I have enough for every day of the school year for next year.”
"Now that we're using Formative, the teachers only have to look at the total number correct and transfer the grade into their grade books. This process takes about five minutes"
"By 'hiding student names' students can openly have discussions about each other’s mathematical reasoning and understanding."
"Formative gives me the tool to start looking at those foundational errors, and fixing them at the time the students are first learning a concept and making those errors. As a teacher, I can finally see the ball being hit!"
"Formative’s ability to provide teachers with this option provides a level of safety for students that will really allow them to be authentic in their voice."
"Math conversations in the sixth grade classrooms became more detailed and collaborative as students were able to “show and tell” their mathematical thinking."
"I decided to use Formative with my reading groups, because I was noticing that some of my students weren't completing their independent activities that were being assigned to them."
"I started and ended the unit with a short answer response on their knowledge of exponent rules."
They are taking ownership of their learning and if they don't do so well, they will always ask, "What can I do better next time?".
"Students no longer have to wait several days to get feedback; I can intervene and re-teach students immediately."
"Formative is incredible. It is easy to use and in my opinion, essential for assessment for learning."
"This type of feedback has helped to cultivate a community of writers that expects and welcomes feedback from me as well as peers."
"I can have students go back and look at an answer so I am allowing corrective feedback to take place."
"Formative is the perfect online assessment tool...tap into student thinking in a unique way."
"Just by looking at the images, I could see whether they were getting the gist of the poem."
"One thing that I do is share my favorite “no” with the students and have them assess why they think the answer is wrong and what they could do to make it right."
"Formative helped my students to work in groups and also build discussion between groups! "
"One of my main objectives is working our way up the SAMR model so that technology allows us to redefine education, rather than just substitute and augment our lessons."
"Formative has allowed me to get to know my students on a whole new level and provide them with the opportunity to express their feelings in an inviting way. The students actually ask for check-ins!"
"The kids even took it further and put in examples, added color, and anything else to be the student or students I spotlighted as a great example."
"It's been incredibly successful, has increased engagement, but most importantly their understanding and accountability."
"Being able to provide just-in-time direct instruction to students as they go through a unit is a very big deal in a classroom of 30 students. GoFormative provides me with that flexibility."
“I use the insight into their thinking to help plan for the next day's instruction. I feel so much more confident that students are getting exactly what they need each and every day when using Formative.”
“I teach science to ALL of 5th grade at my school...I can look at each individual questions one at a time and see every response. It keeps myself and my students organized.”
“I use Formative to make Math more interactive for my students. The first time I used it my students were amazed at all the options!”
“I use Formative to help students grasp complex Social Studies concepts in our textbook. For example, we are currently studying the Southwest. To understand some larger words (aerospace, observatory, xeriscaping), I used YouTube videos and design websites to allow students to interact with what these words mean. It's even more amazing that I can watch their results in real time!”
“We use Formative as a growth tool to see where the students are at, provide feedback to those students, allow for them to re-learn/ask questions, and then retake to show understanding.”
“My kids love Formative!! I have used it in so many ways...one of my favorite ways is I put a short YouTube video with a few questions, my students watch the video, answer the questions and then we discuss the topic.”
“Regardless of the activity or assessment, I have use the feedback features in Formative to provide timely, relevant and personalized feedback for my students. This feedback has really help my students accomplish the goals I have set for them in my class. Thank you for creating such an amazing tool for educators and students!”
“Formative has been useful because this year we are a digital blended classroom. Students can take formatives when they think they are ready for them. I can then quickly assess their progress.”
“I use Formative most often to gauge how my quiet, less-inclined to share students respond. It also is an amazing way for me to figure out how to pull small groups based on need!”
“I use it to track students as they work. When I see common mistakes, I can stop the class and reteach a concept really quickly or I can intervene one on one with students as necessary. I have noticed an improvement in final score and a really healthy rate of engagement, since using Formative...(it also makes grading assignments a breeze).”
“I have used Formative to assess in my science class, as well as my writing class. Giving my students real-time feedback has proven itself to be incredibly valuable. I love seeing their "lightbulb" moments as they are refreshed on content that we are reviewing, or as they remember valuable concepts.”
“I use Formative on a (nearly) daily basis. I use it to diagnose the specific needs of my students so that I can quickly intervene to clear up misconceptions and prevent confusion. This tool is AMAZING and I've shared it with my colleagues who, in turn, also love the capabilities and possibilities this tool offers!”
"I scan in worksheets that I would normally hand out and am able to see student responses live. Watching them submit their responses is like seeing into their thinking process. As they respond, I can give instant feedback so they can modify their answer and deepen their understanding of the content. I can also clarify directions independently for those who need it.”
“I use Formative to provide immediate feedback as students are writing their answers. This allows students to make revisions in real-time. I also use the colored grading scale to help students to see how close they are to meeting the goal for each answer. This color system is much more meaningful to my students than numerical grades."
“Formative has replaced paper journals in my class; students journal at Formative, so I can give each student immediate feedback on what they share--and nobody loses their journals anymore. Several students are sharing more in their journals than they ever have before! Today we'll be "voting" in the primary election using a ballot I made with Formative, so we'll get live results.“
“I love how I can view student work to actually see how the students are working out the problems. It allows me to zone in on common errors and individualize instruction.”
“Formative offers a valuable and non-disruptive way to generate discussion about more sensitive topics."
“Using Formative has allowed me to check for understanding in a variety of ways. In addition, I like that I can view their thought process in action. I can jump in if I see a major misunderstanding or frustration. I can also see if I need to add a challenge in for someone. The more I use it the more I want to use it.”
“I use Formative daily in almost every subject. I primarily use it to provide students with feedback. It's such a simple platform for me to interact with my students around their thinking.”
“I've used Formative in many ways, including flipped lessons, assessments, bell ringers, and exit slips to help me get and give immediate feedback. The students love it, and I can't believe how fast and easy it is!”
“I like to use Formative as warm up activities to jump start thinking in my class. Works like a charm. The data tells me where the gaps in understanding are so it guides me in my next step planning.”
“We all love using Formative! We use it for pre-assessments, exit tickets, differentiated work, and homework. I love the various question options and ability to add videos, photos of student work, websites and more! It's amazing!”
“I love the flexibility and the variety in ways to present information or do quick checks on my kids. It allows them to work individually but also for me to be able to monitor their progress. The first time I used Formative, my kids loved it! They said it was so cool!”

"I loved that they could immediately see either the correct or incorrect way to spell the word and compare their own responses."
